How should I care for my knife?
Knife CareHigh carbon steel is much different than stainless steel, and it will rust if not cared for.The number one most important thing to care for any high carbon steel knife is to never put it away wet. Always wipe it dry.If the sheath gets saturated, store the knife and sheath separately until the sheath is dry.If the knife will be in storage for an extended period of time, a light coat of oil is recommended.
I recommend something along the lines of Wolf Premium Ultimate Knife Care oil. It helps orevent rust and corrosion. It also works as a honing oil. Best of all, its made in the USA.
Knife CleaningIt is important to clean your knife and not let any contaminants sit on the knife for extended periods of time to avoid patina or rust from occuring. Cleaning your knife is simple, never put it in the dishwasher, but instead hand wash it. Use a soft sponge and dish soap. Wipe it down good on the blade and handle, then towel dry it. Once done, let it sit on a dry towe for a bit to completely dry before putting it back in your sheath or kitchen drawer. Never put your knife back in a wet sheath. If it becomes wet in the field, once you clean it, be sure and let the sheath and knife sit apart until both are completely dry. Clean the knife as mentioned above.
Why did my knife develop a coloring or a patina? What causes this and what can I do about it?PatinaHigh carbon steel will also be affected from contacting certain items. Potatoes, strawberries, marinades, seasonings, etc. can all etch the steel by their acidity. Anything that has an acidity can etch the steel. The blade will develop its own patina and character over time. It only adds to the unique beauty of it, as every blade is different. However, if you develop deep rust, or etching a patina that you do not desire, let me know. I may be able to bring it back to its original state, or we can discuss what can be done.
